Does Biking Save Money?

A common misconception is that biking to work saves money. Lets break it down. According to answers.com the maintenance of a car is 30 cents per mile. Say you live twenty miles from work. You'd have to pay 6 dollars one way for gas, mainenance etc... Now, lets look at biking. According to bike forums you burn about 650 calories on that trip. (at a speed of twenty miles an hour). The cost of an energy bar to replenish that calorie burn would be 6 dollars (cliffbar). Once you add maintenance to the bike it is way less efficient to bike to work.

  1. Even though biking saves money, it helps to reduce the Co2 emissions that cause global warming. I would rather ride my bike places rather than drive my car.
